What is the shelf life of perfume?

Many people believe that perfumes, like cosmetics, have a fixed shelf life. However, not all perfumes spoil at the same time. Generally, unopened perfumes can last 3 to 5 years, and some high-quality perfumes, if stored properly, can even last longer. After opening, due to frequent exposure to air, the fragrance will gradually change. It is recommended to use it within 2 to 3 years to maintain its optimal scent.

The key factor affecting the lifespan of perfume is not how long it has been stored, but how it is stored. If stored in high temperatures, direct sunlight, or humid environments for extended periods, the fragrance ingredients and alcohol will oxidize rapidly, causing the scent to fade or even develop a pungent odor. Therefore, it is best to store perfume in a cool, dry, and dark place, minimizing frequent shaking and prolonged opening.

You can also determine if a perfume is still usable by observing its appearance and smell. If you notice a significant darkening of the liquid color, cloudiness, or sedimentation, or if the scent is drastically different from when you first bought it-with a pungent top note and barely detectable middle and base notes-then the perfume has changed. In this situation, even if it can still be sprayed, it's difficult to bring out the original fragrance layers.

If you have multiple perfumes at home, you can use them in rotation according to their opening time to avoid leaving one bottle for too long. After each use, tighten the cap promptly and avoid storing it in environments with large temperature fluctuations, such as in a car or bathroom. With proper storage, most perfumes can maintain their quality for a long time, allowing you to smell almost the original fragrance each time you use it.
